An installation using Linux Mint 13 based on Ubuntu 12.10. Install virtualbox and download Linux Mint XFCE 13. Install Linux mint 13 XFCE on virtual box.<\/p>\n

Once installed open terminal and run.<\/p>\n

> sudo apt-get update
> sudo apt-get upgrade
> sudo apt-get install build-essential<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Get some coffee beans and start brewing :D. Back to terminal.<\/p>\n

> su
# adduser hadoop
# passwd hadoop<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Into the new users account<\/p>\n

> su hadoop
> cd ~
> wget ftp:\/\/ftp.mirrorservice.org\/sites\/ftp.apache.org\/hadoop\/common\/hadoop-1.0.4\/hadoop-1.0.4.tar.gz<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Note: check from\u00a0http:\/\/www.apache.org\/dyn\/closer.cgi\/hadoop\/common\/ and see which newer version you want. Here the installation is based on stable 1.0.x.
Check if your java is installed.<\/p>\n

> java -version<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

<\/a><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

Unzip the file
> tar xvfz hadoop-1.0.4.tar.gz<\/i><\/p>\n

This will show the location of your java installation directory
> which java
> grep JAVA ~\/hadoop-1.0.4\/conf\/hadoop-env.sh
> nano\u00a0~\/hadoop-1.0.4\/conf\/hadoop-env.sh<\/p>\n

and change JAVA_HOME to below.<\/p>\n

# The only required environment variable is JAVA_HOME. \u00a0All others are<\/i>
# set JAVA_HOME in this file, so that it is correctly defined on<\/i>
# export JAVA_HOME=\/usr\/lib\/j2sdk1.5-sun<\/i>
export JAVA_HOME=\/usr\/<\/i>
# note that this should be \/usr\/bin\/java , but it seems that \/usr\/ works on linux mint??<\/i>

<\/i><\/i>
> cd ~\/hadoop-1.0.4<\/i>
> mkdir input<\/i><\/p>\n

>\u00a0<\/i>cp conf\/*.xml input<\/span>

<\/i>To test..

<\/i>>\u00a0bin\/hadoop jar hadoop-examples-*.jar grep input output ‘dfs[a-z.]+’<\/i>
>\u00a0ls -l output<\/i>
